Issued by the Green Sharm Project
General Background
1. The Green Sharm Project is an initiative funded by the United Nations Development Programme and the Global Environment Facility, implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Development.
The project adopts and supports the transformation of Sharm El Sheikh into an integrated and sustainable tourist city at the environmental level, and links tourism development with sustainable waste management, energy resource utilization, pollution reduction, and conservation. Approach
Protecting coral reefs, especially the natural marine capital of the tourist destination, is considered a cornerstone of sustainable urban planning and biodiversity.
To achieve this goal, the coral reefs are considered a central pillar of the tourism value chain, as they support the city's tourism economy.
These reefs are considered one of the most important assets upon which the tourism economy of Sharm El Sheikh depends.
They represent a vital ecological habitat for life.
These reefs also represent a marine environment and thousands of job opportunities.
Protecting them from material damage is a marine environmental and economic priority. Therefore, their loss is irreplaceable, and they support marine biodiversity.
Whether at the tourist destination or at the daily buoys of Sharm El Sheikh's marine tourism boats without the need to drop them off,
This network of owned underwater hydraulic installation equipment allows boats to anchor directly to the coral reefs.
The buoys are located at various diving sites. Maintenance and repair of buoys used in the South Sinai Nature Protection Sector
In the event of a breakdown of this equipment, the likelihood of boats resorting to it increases. This is due to the inability to properly repair or install the buoys.
This results in direct physical damage to coral colonies and the general structure of the reefs.
