The project Fietspoort Spanjaardsbrug contributes to the transition to sustainable mobility by promoting walking, cycling, and the use of public transport. The ongoing route over the Spanjaardsbrug is part of a heavily used regional cycling route (approximately 10,000 cyclists per day) for commuting, school traffic, and recreational traffic. However, space around and on the Spanjaardsbrug is limited, leading to unsafe traffic situations for various users. The task of the project is to redesign the Lage Rijndijk from the Sumatrastraat in Leiden to the intersection of the Zijldijk and the Van der Valk Boumanweg in Leiderdorp as a bicycle street. This involves closing the Spanjaardsbrug to motor vehicle traffic, except for public transport and emergency services, and adjusting the road section between the Zijldijk intersections to align with the new traffic situation. The project aims to improve traffic safety and livability by giving space to slow traffic and public transport.
